ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Miss Atomic (pageants)

Miss Atomic pageants were beauty pageants that were held in the 1950s and 1960s in the United States. These pageants were meant to celebrate and promote the peaceful use of atomic energy.

You see, during this time, atomic energy was a big deal! People believed that it could improve our lives in many ways, by providing electricity for homes and cars, and even helping doctors treat diseases. However, atomic energy was also very scary because it could be very dangerous if not used properly.

To help people feel less scared about atomic energy, the Miss Atomic pageants were created. These pageants featured young women who competed in categories like swimsuit and talent, just like other beauty pageants. However, the difference was that the contestants would often dress up in atomic-themed costumes, like mushroom cloud dresses and radiation symbols on their clothing.

Miss Atomic pageants were held in places like Las Vegas and other cities near nuclear testing sites. The winners of these pageants were often given prizes like trips to see atomic energy facilities or even a ride in an atomic-powered car!

Today, we know that atomic energy can still be dangerous and it's important to use it responsibly. While the Miss Atomic pageants might seem odd or even inappropriate now, they were a product of their time and were meant to help people feel more comfortable about a new technology that had the potential to benefit humanity.
