Mississippi River Squadron

Okay kiddo, you know how there is a really big river in the United States called the Mississippi River? Well, a long time ago during a big war called the Civil War, both sides of the war wanted to control that river. One side, called the Union, made a group of boats and ships called the Mississippi River Squadron to help them control the river.

They had big boats with lots of cannons (like big water guns) sticking out of them. They used these cannons to scare away the other side's boats and to protect their own boats as they moved up and down the river. The Union wanted to control the Mississippi River because it was an important way for them to move supplies and troops (large groups of soldiers) from one place to another.

So, the Mississippi River Squadron helped the Union to control the river and they won the war. After the war was over, the Mississippi River Squadron was no longer needed and they were disbanded (which means they were no longer a group).
