ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mixed-race

Alright kiddo, imagine you have a pack of crayons - some are blue, some are red, some are yellow, and so on. Now, imagine that you take some of the blue crayon and some of the red crayon and you mush them together really well. What do you get?

That's right - you get a new color! It's called purple.

The same thing can happen with people. Sometimes a mommy and a daddy from different groups of people get together and have a baby. That baby might have some traits from the mommy's group of people, and some traits from the daddy's group of people.

For example, if mommy is from a group of people who have dark skin and daddy is from a group of people who have light skin, their baby might have something in between - like a tan. Or, if mommy's group of people usually have curly hair and daddy's group of people usually have straight hair, their baby might have wavy hair.

When someone has traits from different groups of people, we say that they are "mixed-race." It just means that they had a mommy and daddy from different backgrounds, and they have some traits from each group of people.

It's important to remember that everyone is unique and special, no matter what their race or background is. Being mixed-race is just one part of who someone is - it doesn't define them completely.
