ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Modal neo-logicism

Modal neo-logicism is a big idea that some really smart people came up with to try and explain some pretty complicated stuff in a way that's easier to understand.

Basically, it's all about numbers and how we can understand them. You know when you count your fingers or your toys or even the number of cookies you get from your mom, right? Well, in math, we use numbers to help us count and do other cool stuff.

Now, here's where it gets a little tricky. Some people say that numbers are just made up by us humans and they don't actually exist in the real world. Other people say that numbers are a real thing that we can discover, like we discover other things about the world.

Modal neo-logicism tries to explain this by using something called modal logic. It's like a special language that helps us talk about possibilities and what could have happened if things were different.

For example, imagine you have 3 cookies and your friend has 2. If you gave your friend one of your cookies, how many cookies would you have left? You would still have two, right? That's because 3-1=2.

Modal neo-logicism says that this equation, 3-1=2, is true not just in our world, where we have cookies and friends and can physically take one away, but in any possible world, where things are different.

So, even if we lived in a world where cookies didn't exist and you had to take a toy away from your friend instead, you would still end up with two toys because of that equation.

This might all sound a bit confusing, but basically, modal neo-logicism is just a way for us to understand numbers and how they work in a really cool and logical way.
