ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Modal testing

Ok, so imagine that you have a toy drum. Every time you hit the drum, it makes a sound, right? Now, the drum also has some special parts called "modes" that are kind of like different ways that the drum can vibrate and make different sounds.

Modal testing is like a way that scientists and engineers can figure out all the different modes of something, like a drum or maybe even a whole building, by tapping it or shaking it in different ways and listening to how it sounds. They use special machines and instruments to do this.

Why do they do this? Well, knowing all the different modes of something can help them figure out if there are any problems or weaknesses that need to be fixed. It's kind of like when you go to the doctor and they do different tests on you to see if everything is ok. Modal testing is like a check-up for things that aren't alive, and it helps make sure they're working right!
