Modern Greek Enlightenment

The modern Greek Enlightenment was an important movement that happened in Greece during the 18th century. This movement was inspired by the ideas of the European Enlightenment, which was a time when people started questioning things and trying to understand the world around them.

During this time, Greek scholars, philosophers, and writers started to think critically about Greek society and its relationship to the rest of Europe. This resulted in a renewed interest in the ancient Greek language, literature, and philosophy.

The modern Greek Enlightenment reached its peak in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Greek intellectuals and writers started to publish books and articles that advocated for the use of the Greek language and the importance of Greek culture. Many of these writers also advocated for the freedom of the Greek people from foreign rule, as Greece was still under the control of the Ottoman Empire at the time.

Some of the most important figures in the modern Greek Enlightenment were Adamantios Korais, Athanasios Christopoulos, and Rigas Feraios. They wrote extensively on a wide variety of topics, including politics, philosophy, and poetry.

Their work was influential in inspiring Greeks to fight for their independence, which they achieved in 1821. The modern Greek Enlightenment also had a lasting impact on Greek culture and society, as it helped to inspire a renewed interest in the Greek language and traditions that continue to this day.
