Molecular ion

A molecular ion is an atom or group of atoms (called a molecule) with an electrical charge. When atoms or molecules gain a charge they become charged particles called ions. A molecular ion can either have a positive or negative charge. Positive charges are formed when atoms gain extra electrons, while negative charges are formed when atoms lose electrons. Molecular ions are important because electrical charges can be used to help us control and study the chemical properties of molecules.
