Hey kiddo, have you ever seen what happens to an ice cube when it gets very, very hot? It melts, right? Well, that's kind of what happens to salt when it gets VERY hot!
You know how we sprinkle salt on our food to give it some extra taste? That's because when we put salt on our tongue, it dissolves in our saliva and makes it taste salty. But when salt gets heated up to a really high temperature, like in a special kind of oven, it turns into liquid – just like ice turning into water when it gets hot.
That liquid; the molten salt, is really interesting because it can get super, super hot and still stay liquid! And because it's so hot, it can be used to do lots of special things.
For example, some people use molten salt to help make energy. They put the molten salt in a special kind of machine called a "nuclear reactor", and it helps to make energy that can be used to power things like our homes!
Molten salt can also be used to help make some types of materials or chemicals, and some scientists are even researching how to use it to power things like cars and airplanes!
So, while salt on your food is just a little bit of white crystals, molten salt is a secret that scientists and engineers use to make all sorts of amazing things!
