Moniliophthora perniciosa

Moniliophthora perniciosa is a kind of fungus that really likes to live on cocoa trees. This little guy is way too small for us to see with our own eyes, but it can cause big problems for the cocoa trees it lives on. When the fungus infects a cocoa tree, it can make the tree sick and eventually kill it.

Now, cocoa trees are super important because they are the ones that give us cocoa beans!! And cocoa beans are used to make chocolate – yum! So, when Moniliophthora perniciosa infects cocoa trees, it can really hurt the chocolate-making process.

Scientists are working hard to find ways to stop this fungus from spreading and infecting more cocoa trees. This is so that we can still have delicious chocolate in the future.
