ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Morse theory

So imagine you are playing a treasure hunt game, where you have to find a treasure box in a big field. You start from one side of the field and keep walking until you find the box. Now, imagine that you could keep track of how high or low the ground was as you walked around. If you put all the heights on a paper, it would look like a wavy line.

Now, let's say you know that the treasure box is hidden at the top of the highest point of the field. All you have to do is follow the wavy line until you reach the highest point, and there you will find the treasure box.

Morse theory is a way of using this idea to find the highest (or lowest) points in math equations. Instead of walking around a field, we look at the equation and try to find the highest or lowest points. We draw a wavy line that shows us how the equation changes as we move around. This wavy line is called a Morse function.

The Morse function helps us find critical points in the equation, which are kind of like the peaks and valleys in the field. If we can find the highest (or lowest) critical point, we have solved the equation!

So to sum it up, Morse theory is like a treasure hunt game where we use a wavy line to help us find the highest or lowest points in a math equation. It's pretty cool, right?
