ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Motor-paced racing

So, you know how when you ride your tricycle or bike really fast, you feel the wind in your hair and it feels like you're flying? Well, motor-paced racing is just like that, but even faster and more exciting.

In this kind of race, instead of just pedaling on their own, the bike riders have a special motorcycle (called a motorbike, or "pace bike") in front of them. The motorbike goes really fast - like, almost as fast as a car! - and it creates a wind tunnel that helps the bike riders go even faster.

The bike riders have to stay really close to the motorbike so they can get the most benefit from the wind. It's kind of like when you play the game "Follow the Leader" and you have to try to stay right behind the person in front of you. But in motor-paced racing, the riders are going so fast that it's hard to keep up!

The riders take turns being in front, like when you take turns being "it" in a game of tag. The person in front has to pedal really hard to push through the wind, but the people behind them get to coast a little and save their energy. Then they switch places and someone else gets to be the "it" bike rider.

The first person to cross the finish line wins the race! It takes a lot of skill, practice, and bravery to be a motor-paced racer, but it can be really exciting to watch. Just make sure you don't try it on your tricycle, because that's not safe!
