ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Moult

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a bird or a crab shedding their old skin or feathers? That process is called moulting.

Just like how you outgrow your clothes and need new ones, animals also need to replace their old skin or feathers to stay healthy and grow.

During moult, new skin or feathers grow underneath the old ones. Then, the old ones fall off so that the new ones can take their place.

Sometimes, animals might look a little scruffy and unkempt during moult, but don't worry, it's just a normal part of their growth process!
