ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Multimodal transport

Multimodal transport is like going on a journey where you use different kinds of vehicles to get to your destination.

Imagine that you want to go to the beach which is far away from your house. You cannot walk that far or go by car directly so you have to use different vehicles such as a bicycle, train, and then a bus to finally reach the beach.

Similarly, in multimodal transport, different modes of transportation like trains, trucks, ships, and airplanes are used to carry goods from one place to another.

For example, goods could be loaded onto a truck to be transported to the nearest port or railway station. From there, the goods could be loaded onto a train or ship to cover long distances, and then finally another truck could carry the goods to their final destination.

This way, the shipping process becomes more efficient and cost-effective because it uses the best methods of transportation available for each part of the journey.
