ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Multistage rocket

A multistage rocket is like a really, really big firework! A rocket is made of different sections, each of which needs their own fuel and engine. When the fuel in one section is used up, the engine and that section are detached from the rocket and a new engine and fuel are used to power the next part of the rocket. This process is known as "staging" because the rocket is being broken up into sections or stages. Multistage rockets are very powerful and can help us explore space because when all the fuel in all the sections is used up, and all the stages have detached, the remaining part of the rocket still has a lot of power and can go really, really fast!
