ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Municipium

Okay, imagine you are playing with your toys in your room, and you have a toy city that you have built. Now, imagine that you invite your friends over to play with your city, and you all decide that you are going to make some rules to follow while playing. These rules might say things like "no knocking down other people's buildings" or "everyone takes turns deciding what to do next."

In ancient Rome, they had real cities that were like your toy city. When they conquered a new area, they would sometimes turn the local people into citizens of Rome. These people were allowed to keep their own laws and customs, but they had to follow some Roman rules too. The cities where these people lived were called municipia, or municipium in Latin.

The people who lived in a municipium were allowed to govern themselves and had some rights, like being able to vote for their own leaders. They also had to pay taxes to Rome and sometimes had to provide soldiers for the Roman army. It was like being a part of a big club, where everyone had to follow some rules to be part of the group.

So next time you play with your toy city, remember that the idea of a municipium was kind of like that, except on a much bigger scale!
