Musth is when a male elephant (a bull) experiences a change in their hormones and behavior. During this time they produce more of the male hormone testosterone, and their behavior changes. They become more aggressive and may wander farther away from their herd than usual. Musth usually occurs in the late summer/autumn months when the bull is looking for a mate. As they move around, they make loud trumpet-like sounds, so people can usually hear them and know that they are in musth.
