ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Naikan

Naikan is a special way of thinking about ourselves and our lives. It helps us focus on the good things in our life and be thankful for them.

Imagine you have a big bag of toys that you love to play with. Sometimes you forget how special those toys are because you've had them for a while. Naikan helps you remember how much you love and appreciate each one of those toys.

Naikan asks you to think about three questions:
1. What have I received from ___ (a specific person or situation)?
2. What have I given to ___ ?
3. What troubles and difficulties have I caused for ___?

By thinking about these questions, you can remember all the good things that someone has given you, and all the good things you have done for others. It also helps you think about any problems you may have caused for someone else, so you can apologize and do better in the future.

In summary, naikan helps us appreciate the things we have, and think about how we can be kinder to others. It's like taking a moment to count all the toys in your bag and appreciate them all over again.
