ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nanoelectromechanical systems

Nano means very, very small. Electromechanical means it has to do with things that are both electrical (like wires and batteries) and mechanical (like gears and machines that move). Systems refers to a bunch of these things working together.

So nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) are made up of tiny things that use electricity to move or do things.

Imagine you have a tiny machine that can spin around really fast when you give it a little charge of electricity. This is a NEMS! It's so small that you can't see it without a microscope, and it's so delicate that it can only be handled by special machines in a special laboratory.

Scientists use NEMS to do a lot of different things like sensing very small things like viruses or measuring tiny amounts of force. They also want to use NEMS to make really, really small computers that are faster and use less power than the ones we use today.

So, nanoelectromechanical systems are like little machines that use electricity to do things, but they're so small that you need a microscope to see them!
