ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nastaʿlīq

Nastaʿlīq is a way of writing that people use in some parts of the world. It's a type of writing that is very fancy and beautiful to look at. People use it to write things like poems or important documents.

When we write in nastaʿlīq, we use a special pen called a qalam. It's not like the kind of pen that you use in school. It's more like a paintbrush that you dip into ink.

We write our words from right to left (just like in Arabic), but they don't look the same as they do in regular writing. Each letter in the nastaʿlīq alphabet has a fancy shape. They all connect to each other and make pretty patterns on the page.

Sometimes it can be hard to read words in nastaʿlīq, because they are so fancy and have lots of curves and loops. But it's an important part of many cultures and is a way to create beautiful art with the written word.
