ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

National Memorial Day of the Exiles and Foibe

Okay kiddo, so there was a really sad time in history when a lot of people were forced to leave their homes and move to another place. This happened in a country called Italy after World War II. These people were called exiles and it was very hard for them to leave their homes, friends, and family behind.

On top of that, there were also some really terrible things that happened to people during this time. In a place called the Foibe area, many people were pushed into really deep holes in the ground and they were never able to come out. This was a really horrible thing to happen and it made a lot of people very sad.

Now, every year on a special day called the National Memorial Day of the Exiles and Foibe, the people in Italy remember all of the people who had to leave their homes and the ones who lost their lives in the Foibe area. They light candles, have big ceremonies and do lots of things to show how much they care about the people who went through these sad times.
