ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nautical fiction

Nautical fiction is like telling a story about pirates, sailors, and ships! You know how in cartoons there are those ships with a lot of sails and big wooden wheels? That's what we're talking about here.

When we read nautical fiction, it usually takes place on the open sea (the really big ocean). We'll hear about sailors who have to work together to control their ship, fight off sea creatures, or go on dangerous treasure hunts. Sometimes there are bad guys like pirates who try to steal the sailors' treasure or hurt them.

Everything in nautical fiction is about the ocean and ships that sail on it. It can be exciting because we get to learn about what it's like to be a sailor who carries out important missions on the water. Oh, and some of the books may have pictures too, so we can imagine ourselves there too!
