ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nazi concentration camps

So, you know how sometimes people can be really, really mean to each other and hurt other people because they look different or believe different things? Well, a long time ago in a place called Germany, there were some people who were very, very mean to a group of people called Jewish people. They hurt them and made them do things they didn't want to do, like leave their homes and live in a tiny, crowded place called a ghetto.

But that wasn't the worst part. There were some really, really mean people called Nazis who thought Jewish people were bad and wanted to get rid of them all. They made a plan to take them away to special places called concentration camps.

These concentration camps were not nice places at all. The Jewish people were forced to do hard work, given very little food, and treated very poorly. They were put in tiny, cramped quarters with many other people, and sometimes they were even killed or hurt for no reason at all.

The Nazis also put other groups of people they didn't like, like gypsies, people with disabilities, and gay people, in concentration camps too.

These camps were very, very sad places where people were mistreated and hurt. Many people died in these camps, and it was a very dark and terrible time in history. It's important to remember what happened so we can make sure it never happens again.
