ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Neonatal withdrawal

Okay kiddo, so sometimes when a mom takes medicine, like pain medicine or medicine for anxiety, it can get into the baby’s body too. When the baby is born they might have a hard time without that medicine because they got used to having it in their system.

This is called neonatal withdrawal. It can make the baby feel uncomfortable, like they have an upset stomach or they can’t sleep. It’s important for the doctors and nurses to watch the baby closely and give them special care if they need it. The baby will start feeling better after a little while and they can go home with their family.
