ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Neophyte (botany)

Okay kiddo, so in the plant world, a neophyte is kind of like a baby plant or a newcomer to a certain place or environment. It means that this particular plant species is not native to that area and has been introduced to it recently.

Imagine you have a new friend who just moved to your neighborhood. That friend is a neophyte, just like a new plant in a new place. The plant might have been brought there by people or animals, or it might have accidentally traveled there.

Sometimes neophytes can cause problems because they don't have any natural predators or enemies in their new environment. This can make them grow and spread faster than the native plant species, which can upset the balance of the ecosystem.

So next time you see a new plant in your yard or in a park, remember that it might be a neophyte still learning about its new home.
