Neurotoxic shellfish poisoning

Have you ever eaten clams, mussels or oysters? They are very yummy! But sometimes, these things can make us sick because they may have a poison in them called neurotoxins.

Neurotoxins are harmful substances that can damage our brain and nerves. When we eat these shellfish that have been contaminated by neurotoxins, our bodies can also be harmed. This illness is called neurotoxic shellfish poisoning.

The neurotoxins can come from tiny creatures that live in the ocean called dinoflagellates. These dinoflagellates can grow and multiply quickly, and some kinds can make the neurotoxins. When shellfish eat these dinoflagellates, the neurotoxins can build up in their bodies, making them poisonous to eat.

If people eat these contaminated shellfish, they can suffer from symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and paralysis. The paralysis can be very serious because it can stop people from breathing, which is very scary and dangerous.

To avoid getting sick from neurotoxic shellfish poisoning, it's very important to be careful where you get your shellfish. If you're unsure if it's safe, it's better to avoid it altogether. It's also important to cook shellfish thoroughly before you eat them because this may help to destroy the neurotoxins.
