ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Night flying restrictions

When we fly on an airplane, we need to be very careful about when we fly at night. Just like how we need to be careful about not staying up too late and making sure we get enough sleep, airplanes need to be careful about flying when it's dark outside.

The reason for this is that it can be harder for pilots to see where they are going at night. Just like how it can be hard for us to see in the dark without a nightlight, pilots need to use special equipment to help them see better at night.

But even with this special equipment, it can still be tricky to see things like mountains or other obstacles that might be in the way. That's why there are rules in place to help keep airplanes safe when flying at night.

For example, airplanes need to have certain types of equipment on board to help them see better in the dark. They're also not allowed to fly too close to mountains or other obstacles that might be hard to see at night. And pilots need to be extra careful when taking off or landing in the dark, since it can be harder to judge distance and speed.

So while it might seem like a bummer that we can't fly at night as much, it's important to remember that it's all about keeping everyone safe. Just like how we wear our seatbelts in the car to stay safe, airplanes have rules to help keep us safe in the sky.
