ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nominalization

Okay kiddo, so do you know what a noun is? It's a word that's used to name a person, place, thing or idea. Now, sometimes people take other words like verbs or adjectives and turn them into nouns. This is what we call nominalization.

Let me give you an example to help you understand. Suppose you have the word 'run'. When you use it as a verb, it means to move very quickly using your feet. But when you add '-ing' at the end of it to make it 'running', it becomes a noun. Now, 'running' doesn't mean the action of running, but it means the thing itself.

Another example is the word 'happy'. When you use it as an adjective, it describes a feeling of joy or pleasure. But when you add '-ness' at the end of it to make it 'happiness', it becomes a noun. Now, 'happiness' isn't describing a feeling, but it's a thing that you have or experience.

So basically, nominalization just means turning other types of words into nouns. It helps us to talk about things in a more specific way and gives us different ways to express ourselves.
