ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Non-fermenter

Okay kiddo, so when we talk about non-fermenters, we are actually talking about certain types of bacteria that can't break down some kinds of sugars like other bacteria can. Remember when we made lemonade together and we put sugar in it to make it sweet? Well, some bacteria can eat that sugar and turn it into something else, but non-fermenters can't do that.

This means that when these non-fermenting bacteria grow, they don't give off the same kind of gases that other bacteria do, which is one way we can tell them apart. These non-fermenters can also cause infections in our bodies, which is why doctors and scientists study them and try to find ways to fight them off.

Basically, non-fermenters are bacteria that don't have a sweet tooth and are different than other bacteria in the way they grow and act. Does that make sense?
