Non-helical models of DNA structure

Hey kiddo, do you remember learning about DNA? Well, scientists have discovered that DNA can have different shapes and structures. One of these structures is called a helix, which looks like a twisted ladder.

But, there are also other structures that DNA can have that are not helical. Imagine taking that ladder and flattening it out completely, so it's like a straight line. This is what a non-helical model of DNA looks like.

Scientists have also found that DNA can have a zigzag shape or even a knot-like structure. These models are called non-helical because they do not look twisted like a helix.

Scientists study these different models of DNA to better understand how they work and how they influence our genes and traits. So, just like there are different shapes of blocks that make different structures, DNA can have different shapes too!
