ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Non-rapid eye movement sleep

Non-rapid eye movement sleep (also known as NREM) is the type of sleep we need to rest and relax. It is a deeper, quieter type of sleep that helps us feel refreshed and energized again in the morning. During NREM sleep, our eyes don't move around quickly like they do during REM sleep. Instead, they stay still, and our breathing and heart rate become slow and regular. Our muscles also relax and become less active. NREM sleep helps our body to heal and repair itself. It also helps us think and remember things more clearly.
