Norman architecture

Okay little one, have you ever seen a big building with tall columns and round arches? That's called Norman architecture. It's named after a group of people called the Normans who came from a place called Normandy in France and conquered England in the 11th century.

Norman architecture is famous for being very strong and sturdy. It used big stones called "ashlar" that were cut into perfect shapes to fit together perfectly. They used these stones to build massive castles, churches and other important buildings.

The most important parts of Norman architecture are the big arches that sit on top of columns. These arches help hold up the weight of the building, and they create an impressive and grand look. They even have a special name - "round arches".

Norman architecture also used lots of decorative patterns, which are like pictures made out of stone. They would carve things like animals and plants into the stone to make it look amazing.

So, when you see a building with big strong columns and fancy patterns on it - just remember that's Norman architecture!
