ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

North Briton

Alright kiddo, a long time ago there was a newspaper in England called the North Briton. It was started by a man named John Wilkes who disagreed with some of the government's decisions and wanted to share his opinions with others.

You see, the government at the time didn't like people criticizing them and they made a law saying that anyone who did could be punished. But John Wilkes didn't want to be quiet, so he wrote articles in his newspaper that were critical of the government.

This made some people very upset, especially the King and his friends. They thought that John Wilkes was being disrespectful and they wanted him to stop. They even sent soldiers to arrest him, but he escaped to France for a little while.

After he came back to England, things got even more intense. The government tried to punish him again and there were riots in the streets because people were angry about the way he was being treated.

Eventually, John Wilkes won his battles and was able to say what he wanted without being punished. He became a hero for many people who believed in free speech and standing up against unfair laws. And that, my little one, is the story of the North Briton.
