ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Novatianism

Novatianism was a belief held by a group of people a long time ago. These people believed that when someone did something really bad, like turning away from their faith, they couldn't be forgiven. They thought that these people should be kicked out of the church and not be allowed to come back, no matter what they did to say they were sorry.

It's kind of like when you break a toy or do something really wrong, your parents might get really mad and take away something you love or put you in time-out. But imagine if they said you could never play with your toys or be their child again, even if you said sorry and promised to do better. That's kind of what Novatianism believed.

Most people didn't agree with this belief because they thought that forgiveness and second chances were important parts of being a good person and following their faith. They thought that if someone was truly sorry and wanted to make things right, they should be given a chance to do that and be welcomed back to the church.

In the end, Novatianism didn't become a widely accepted belief, but it did show that people have different ideas about what's fair and right, even within the same religion.
