ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nth root

Hey there! Have you heard of the word "root"? It's like finding the answer to a really tricky math problem where you have to work backwards.

Now, an "nth root" is a special type of root where instead of finding just one answer, we're trying to find n different answers. This might sound confusing, but let me give you an example.

Let's say we have the number 8. Now, if I ask you what number times itself equals 8, you might say 2. Because 2 x 2 = 4, and then 4 x 2 = 8. That's the "square root" of 8.

But what if I asked you for the "cube root"? This means, what number can we multiply three times to get 8? The answer is 2 again! Because 2 x 2 x 2 = 8.

So, when we say "nth root", we're talking about finding the answer to this question for any number n. For example, the 4th root of 16 is 2, because 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 equals 16.

Does that make sense? An nth root is all about finding the number that can be multiplied n times to give you the original number.
