ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nucleic acid notation

Nucleic acid notation is like a code that scientists use to write down information about molecules that have to do with our genes, which are very important for telling our bodies how to look, what color our hair will be, and how tall we will be, among other things. To understand the code, it's helpful to think of the alphabet. Just like the letters in the alphabet help us make words, the symbols in nucleic acid notation help scientists make different molecules. For example, the letters A, T, G, and C stand for four different molecules that scientists use in their research. And when scientists write out the letters in a certain order, it tells them what molecule they need to make.
