OS virtualization and emulation on Android

Hey kiddo, do you remember playing with dolls or toy cars and imagining they were doing things just like real people or cars? Well, sometimes computers do the same thing with other computers, pretending to be them, so they can do things they couldn't normally do. This is called virtualization.

Now, on your tablet or phone, there is a type of virtualization called OS virtualization. This means that your device pretends to be a completely different computer with a whole different operating system installed on it - like a computer dressed up as a phone or tablet!

Emulation takes this idea one step further by simulating the entire hardware and software environment of another computer system. So, if you wanted to play a game that was only available on an older computer system, instead of buying that old computer, you could use an emulator on your phone or tablet to pretend your device is that other computer system and play the game that way.

So, it's like your device is playing dress-up as another computer, either to run a different operating system with OS virtualization, or to play old computer games or use old software with emulation. Pretty neat, right?
