ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

OSI model

The OSI Model is like a building with 7 floors. It is a way to help us understand how computers connect to each other to share information like emails and websites. Each floor has a different job, so that the computers can send information from one computer to another smoothly.

The first floor helps the two computers find each other - it's like the front door to the building.

The second floor is like the stairs between floors - it helps the computers pass information to each other.

The third floor is like the apartment on each floor - it makes sure the data sent looks right to both computers, like when you check if your address is typed correctly on an envelope.

The fourth floor is like the kitchen - it takes the data and puts it in packages that can travel through the building.

The fifth floor is like the living room - it chooses which path the packages will take through the building and makes sure the packages don't get lost.

The sixth floor is like the bathroom - it makes sure the data gets where it needs to go, like your postal worker checks the address on an envelope before delivering it.

The seventh floor is like the roof - it makes sure the data looks right to both computers when it gets there, like when you check if your package arrived in good condition.

The OSI Model makes sure that computers communicate with each other properly so that information can be shared and we can have the Internet.
