Office of Surface Mining

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen a picture of a mountain with a big hole dug in it? That's called surface mining. It's when people take away the top layer of dirt and rocks to get to the minerals or fossil fuels underneath.

The Office of Surface Mining is a government group that makes sure mining companies follow rules to protect the environment, animals, and people who live nearby. They want to make sure that mining companies do not hurt the places where we live and keep them safe for us to play and live in.

The Office of Surface Mining also helps restore the areas after mining is done, like filling in the holes and replanting trees or other plants so that nature can come back to life. They also help clean up any pollution left behind by mining so we can breathe clean air and drink clean water again.

Overall, the Office of Surface Mining is like a superhero for the environment, helping to keep it clean and healthy for all of us.
