Old South

Old South is a term used to describe the Southern United States during the 19th century. The states that we typically think of as the “Old South” states today include Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. This was a time when the economy was largely based on agriculture, such as farming and raising livestock. Many people in the Old South were enslaved African Americans who worked on these farms or plantations. This period of time ended after the Civil War following the emancipation of enslaved people in 1865.
