ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

One-third hypothesis

You know how sometimes you want to split something with your friends, like a pizza? If there are three of you, it's fair to say that each person will get one-third of the pizza, right? That's because one-third is a fair amount for each person to have.

Well, scientists also use the idea of one-third when they're studying things like genetics or evolution. They might say that one-third of the population has a certain trait or mutation. This helps them understand how common or rare a particular thing is in a group of organisms.

For example, if scientists study a group of birds and find that one-third of them have a certain color on their feathers, they can say that it's pretty common in that group. If they study another group of birds and find that only one-third of them have that same color, they can say it's not as common in that group.

So the one-third hypothesis is just a way that scientists can talk about how common or rare a certain thing is in a group of organisms. It's like splitting a pizza into fair portions, but instead of pizza, it's science stuff!
