ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Openwork

Openwork is like playing with a toy made of lots and lots of straws or pieces of wood that have been woven together. Imagine having a bunch of straws and weaving them together like a basket. You can see through the gaps in between each straw. That's what openwork is like.

When you have something made with openwork, like a shirt or a tablecloth, you can see spaces or holes in between the threads or the material. It's like a pattern or design made up of empty spaces.

Openwork can be really pretty and delicate, but sometimes it can be a bit fragile because things can get caught on it or it can tear easily. But for the most part, openwork adds a lovely touch to things and can make them look very elegant.
