Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS) is a type of allergy that happens when your body mistakes certain proteins in food for pollen. Pollen is a part of plants and the air that can make some people sneeze or wheeze when they breathe it in. With OAS, when you eat certain fruits, vegetables, nuts, or other foods, your body thinks that the proteins in the food are the same as the proteins in the pollen, and this will cause your body to react as if you’re having an allergic reaction. Symptoms of OAS can include itching or tingling of your mouth or throat, swelling of your lips, tongue, or throat, or hives.
