ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Orographic lift

Orographic lift is like when you play with a ball on the ground and it goes up a hill. When the ball goes up the hill, it loses speed because gravity is pulling it down. But the hill is in the way, so it pushes the ball up and slows it down more. This is similar to what happens when air moves up a mountain.

Air moves over the earth's surface and gets pushed up when it reaches a mountain. Just like the ball hitting the hill, the air hitting the mountain slows down and gets pushed up. As the air goes up, it cools down and can form clouds. The clouds can then cause rain or snow because the cool air can't hold as much water as warm air.

Imagine you're on a bike and you're going up a big hill. It's hard to pedal because you're going against gravity, but when you reach the top, you can take a break and relax because gravity is helping you go down. Air that goes up a mountain is like you on the bike going up the hill. It's working hard against gravity, but when it reaches the top of the mountain, it can take a break and relax. This is why it cools down and can form clouds.

Orographic lift happens all over the world, especially in places with big mountains like the Rocky Mountains in North America or the Himalayas in Asia. It's an important part of the weather because it can create rain and snow that helps plants grow and gives us water to drink!
