Ostalgie

Ostalgie is a word used to describe a feeling of nostalgia for life in eastern Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. People who have ostalgie may remember things like the DDR (East German currency), the anthem of East Germany, stories their relatives told them, or the look of their hometown before reunification. It is a way of remembering the past, even if it was quite different from the Germany we live in today.
