Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that causes pain and stiffness in the joints. Your joints are the places in your body where two bones come together - like your knees, hips, shoulders, and fingers.

Osteoarthritis happens when the cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones starts to break down. Usually, cartilage is like a bouncy, cushiony material that helps you move easily. But when it wears down, bones rub against each other, causing pain. You may also see swelling or hear crackling or grinding noises when a joint moves.
