So, a long time ago, there was a place called Otranto. It was a small town by the sea in Italy. However, one day, some very bad people called the Ottomans came from a faraway land and attacked Otranto.
They came with their big army and weapons and started to fight against the people of Otranto. Unfortunately, the people of Otranto were not very strong, and they couldn't fight back very well.
After a while, the Ottomans won the fight, and they took control of Otranto. They wanted to teach the people of Otranto a lesson, so they decided to do something very sad and scary.
They said that all the men in the town had to become Muslims and follow their religion, or else they would be killed. This was very unfair because the people of Otranto loved their own religion and didn't want to change it.
Sadly, many of the men decided to become Muslims because they were afraid of being killed. However, there were 800 brave men who refused to change their religion and stood up for what they believed in.
The Ottomans were very angry with these men and decided to do something even scarier. They lined up all the men in front of a wall and killed them one by one. The people of Otranto were very sad and scared after this terrible event.
However, the courage of those 800 men did not go unnoticed. People from all over the world heard about it and were inspired by their bravery. Today, we remember the Otranto Raid to honor those brave men who stood up for their beliefs, even when it was very difficult.
