ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Out of the Present

Okay, imagine you're playing with some toys right now, but you want to think about something that happened in the past, like what you had for breakfast this morning.

Now, imagine you close your eyes and try really hard to remember what you had for breakfast. You might start thinking about what you ate, who was there with you, what the weather was like outside, and what kind of plate your food was on.

But what if you want to think about something that hasn't happened yet? Like, what you're going to do tomorrow?

That's where the idea of "out of the present" comes in. It means thinking about things that aren't happening right now, whether they've already happened in the past or might happen in the future.

Sometimes we need to think about things that aren't happening right now to make plans, prepare for the future, or remember things from the past. And that's totally normal! Our brains are really good at remembering things and imagining what might happen next.

So, when you hear someone say "out of the present," it just means they're thinking about something that isn't happening right now. And that's okay!
