ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Overlap coefficient

Imagine you have two groups of toys, one group has a bunch of cars and the other group has a bunch of trucks but there are some toys that are both cars and trucks at the same time. The overlap coefficient is a way to measure how many toys are both cars and trucks compared to the total number of toys.

So, let's say you have 10 cars and 10 trucks, but you also have 3 toys that are both cars and trucks. To calculate the overlap coefficient, you need to add up the number of toys that are both cars and trucks, which is 3, and divide it by the total number of toys, which is 17 (10 cars + 10 trucks - 3 toys that are both). This gives you an overlap coefficient of 0.18, which means that 18% of the toys are both cars and trucks.

The overlap coefficient is often used in scientific studies to measure the similarity or overlap between two sets of data or groups. It tells us how much these groups overlap and how much they are different.
