ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Overlapping gene

You know how when you color in a picture and sometimes you go outside the lines and color on the other part of the picture? That's kind of like what happens with overlapping genes.

Genes are little pieces of information that tell your body how to do things. But sometimes, two or more genes are in the same spot on your DNA, kinda like two different pictures on the same page. And just like when you color outside the lines on one picture and it goes onto the other picture, the information from one gene can spill over onto the other gene that's next to it.

This can get a little tricky because it's like trying to read two stories at once. Scientists have to be careful when they study overlapping genes to make sure they know which information goes with which gene. But it's also really cool because it's like two genes are working together to do something even though they're in the same spot.
