ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Overline

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of the overline symbol? It looks like a long line above a letter or a group of letters, like this:

¯

This is called an overline. It's used to show that the letters underneath it are important in some way.

For example, let's say you see the word "apple" with an overline above the letter "a". That means that the letter "a" is special and you should pay extra attention to it. Maybe it's part of a secret code or a special pronunciation.

You might also see an overline used in math. In math, an overline above a number means that you're working with a group of numbers instead of just one. So if you see "x̄," that means you're dealing with the average of a bunch of numbers.

Basically, the overline is like a spotlight that highlights certain things and helps us understand what's important. Pretty cool, huh?
